MJ Pool Party Raises Money For Boys and Girls Club

Gypsy Hill Park pool party raises money for Staunton Boys and Girls Club.

by Sarah Sager

Kids, lifeguards and adults alike are all grooving to the sweets sounds of Michael Jackson. And Kia Brent, Unit Director for the Boys and Girls Club of Staunton says she hopes Michael's memory will help a few kids have school supplies this year.

Brent says,"He cared a lot about the kids and they cared a lot about him so it's only right that we do something to remember him by."

The Staunton Boys and Girls Club helps support about eighty children a year. The idea for the pool party fundraiser came about because of how upset the kids were when the king of pop passed away.

Brent says,"Some of the staff members brought in their CD's and we listened to it for a good six weeks. And when you would turn it off they would be like turn that back on. The kids had a hard time with it."

But the kids aren't the only ones having fun. Martha Fridley took off from work just to come out and be Michael Jackson for the night.

Fridley says,"They had look alike contest and it was just kind of my way of expressing how much I believed in him. I loved his music and I think he was a great entertainer."

Fridley was shocked when she heard the news that Michael Jackson had passed away but she believes he would be pleased that his memory is helping out.

She says,"Staunton's not so big as Hollywood and all but I think he'd be really happy to see this and know that money is going towards the children."

A spokesperson for the Boys and Girls Club said they were not sure how much money was raised tonight but that every little bit helps.
