Murray Reportedly Gave MJ Sedatives Before Death
According to a report of The Associated Press (AP), which is citing a law enforcement official, Dr. Conrad Murray administered multiple sedatives ALONG with the powerful anesthetic propofol to Michael just hours before his death.
The law enforcement official spoke to AP on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.
The official said the type of sedatives Dr. Murray administered were benzodiazepines. They are often used to calm patients before surgery. Benzodiazepines include such widely used antianxiety drugs as Valium and Xanax. The law enforcement official wouldn't name which benzodiazepines Murray gave Michael Jackson.
Combining propofol with benzodiazepines is common in operating rooms. Doing so in a private home is not, and it raises numerous safety issues. It's a safe combination if done properly...BUT potentially lethal if not.
Murray told investigators the doses were within normal medical guidelines. However, even at acceptable levels, benzodiazepines can intensify how the anesthetic propofol depresses breathing. Thus, strict monitoring and careful dosing is absolutely required. The balance can be tricky, a slip-up disastrous.
Murray also told investigators Michael Jackson stopped breathing the morning of June 25 and he was unable to revive him.
