1987 - Sales of ‘Thriller’ now stand at just over 38.5 million worldwide, with the US accounting for a little more than half that total.

1988 - Michael sets another record as the first artist ever to have three albums with US sales of more than six million copies each. On June 1, both ‘Bad’ and ‘Off the Wall’ simultaneously pass the benchmark figure, with total worldwide sales of each album now at 15 and 9 million respectively. Michael’s ‘Thriller’ is still the best-selling album of all time, with global sales of over 40 million units.

1989 - BET, The Black Entertainment Television channel in America, features only Jackson videos on its Video Soul programme. While videos from all family members are shown, the bulk of the show comprises videos by Michael and Janet.

1991 - David Ruffin, a member of The Temptations, dies of a drug overdose. Upon learning that the former Motowner was broke, Michael pays approximately $7,000 for the funeral costs and sends flowers. Michael does not attend the funeral for fear of turning it into a media circus. Reports appear in the press that Madonna has flatly rejected to duet with Michael. It is reported that Michael is trying out a new look under the camera-eye of Herb Ritts. The Sun newspaper prints exclusive pictures of Michael’s proposed new look, which shows him in Gianni Versace’s leathers with a slicked-back hair style. Michael enlists the help of top Los Angeles producers, Babyface and L. A. Reid to work on ideas for his new album. The collaboration is said to have upset brother Jermaine, who is also working with the duo. Jermaine is quoted in the tabloids as saying: “I could have been Michael. It’s all a matter of timing, a matter of luck.” Michael appears on the cover of The Wire magazine in Britain.

1999 - Jonathan Morrish of Sony Music issues a statement informing the media, that Michael will not be performing at today’s ‘Pavarotti & Friends’ Concert in Modena, due to the illness of his son Prince. Mr. Morrish said, “Prince suffered a seizure early Saturday due to a high temperature. This is the third seizure over the last year.” He added that the concert meant so much to Michael but, “he is an artist like the others, but also a parent.”

2004 - A tentative date of September 13, 2004 is set for Michael’s trial for alleged child molestation. Judge Melville also hears arguments on reducing Michael’s bail, but does not issue an immediate ruling. Thomas Mesereau, Michael’s attorney, objects to setting the date because the prosecution had not supplied the defence with all of the evidence they hold in the case.
