THE acrobats of Cirque du Soleil are sure to get a big hand when their show Michael Jackson The Immortal opens at the Entertainment Centre tomorrow.
Not that they need it - they’ve already got one.
The giant hand - a nod to the iconic white sequined glove Jackson wore when he first showed off his “moonwalk” during a 1983 Motown TV special - is just one of the eye-popping set pieces featured in the show, which concludes its whirlwind four-week Australian tour here on Thursday.
Starring 49 dancers, musicians and acrobats from around the world, MJ The Immortal is a fantastical tribute to the late king of pop written by Madonna’s long-time creative director Jamie King, who has also worked with such pop stars as Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna.
The gravity-defying, arena-style spectacular reimagines more than 35 of Jackson’s best-known songs - including Dangerous, Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean - as acrobatic and gymnastic spectacles.
Just don’t expect Jackson himself to be there. One Melbourne punter reportedly demanded a refund on their tickets when they found out he wouldn’t be performing.
