The music legend says he’s owed millions over the use of some of Jackson’s biggest hits, and was not given a producer credit on the music used in the film “This Is It.”
The suit claims Jackson’s estate re-worked music he produced on Jackson’s hit albums “Off The Wall,” “Thriller” and “Bad” and then used it in new ventures including the movie and a pair of Cirque du Soleil show without awarding him appropriate compensation.
Jones is asking a judge to force the estate to fork over a full accounting of its proceeds to determine the full scope of his claim.
A lawyer for Jackson’s estate said he did not believe the executors did anything wrong.
“The Estate of Michael Jackson was saddened to learn that Quincy Jones has filed a lawsuit seeking money from Michael’s estate,” Howard Weitzman said in a statement.
“To the best of (the estate’s) knowledge, Mr. Jones has been appropriately compensated over approximately 35 years for his work with Michael,” he said.
