The Wiz, the Tony award-winning musical classic returns to the Coterie Theatre in Crown Center. The Wiz a modern reimaging of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz runs from Nov. 12 through Jan. 5, 2014, with opening night on Friday Nov. 15. The musical directed by Jeff Church and features now-classic popular songs such as Brand New Day, Home, No Bad News and Ease On Down the Road, made famous by Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. The Wiz opened on Broadway in 1975 and won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
The Wiz shows a view of Oz with a soulful twist. Home, friendship, and family is the underlying message of the 75-minute musical. The production is funded in part by the Missouri Arts Council, ArtsKC Fund, Theater League, and the Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund and is part of the Coterie’s 2013 Shines series.
The critically acclaimed production of the Wiz by the Coterie will feature all the leading actors from the 2011 production. Emily Shackelford returns as Dorothy, Tosin Morohunfola as the Scarecrow and Brad Shaw as the Tinman. Christopher Barksdale will again take on the part of the lion, while Damron Russell Armstrong returns as Uncle Henry and the Wizard. Enjoli Gavin returns in the duo role of Addaperle and Evalene and Nedra Dixon plays Aunt Em and Glinda.
