The guards of the British queen, the Band of the Coldstream Guards, launched into a surprise Michael Jackson medley outside Buckingham Palace in London (Uk) yesterday.
Tourists were stunned when the military band struck up the music to ‘Heal The World’ and ‘Thriller’. Forty drummers, trumpeters, clarinet and trombone players belted out the songs. Soldiers also marched in time as a tuba blasted out the bass line to ‘Bad’.
One tourist said:
“It’s a really fitting tribute to the King of Pop from the Queen of England. Everyone got into the swing, some even did the moonwalk.”
Onlookers danced, whistled and sang along in the Mall.
“It came out of nowhere,” Philip Marfleet (22) said. “We were stunned. They were practising some more traditional tunes and then all of a sudden they started playing Thriller. What a moment.”
Bands play every morning as guards change sentry duty at Buckingham Palace. The tunes often include hits such as Abba’s ‘Dancing Queen’.
The oldest and best known band in the Army have actually been doing the routine for the last two months. A spokesman said:
“The piece has been part of their summer repertoire for a number of events and they’ve been playing it publicly for the last eight weeks, including at the Windsor Tattoo.”
