Here’s why this album should be in your collection!
Record Store Day was April 20, 2013! Thriller (1982) by Michael Jackson excellently illustrates the tremendous value that independent record stores can have for music collectors and fans.
Jackson’s legendary, Grammy-winning album was first released on vinyl in October 1982. Over the next year and several months, seven of its tracks were released as singles; each one became a Top Ten hit, including “Thriller,” the title track, in 1984.
Those other hits (and also, videos) are all well-known: “The Girl is Mine,” a duet with Paul McCartney; “Billy Jean,” “Beat It,” which inspired “Eat It,” a hit parody by Weird Al Yankovic; “Wanna Be Starting Something,” “Human Nature,” “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing),” and a mellow R&B Quiet Storm favorite, “The Lady In My Life.”
Thriller has inspired a number of creative spinoffs: a compact disc, television show, documentary video, special edition reissue with bonus tracks (2001), 25th anniversary CD (2008), USB album, MP3 album, and album-DVD package. Jackson fans can also find CD, MP3, and DVD varieties of his final work, This is It. Independent record stores typically have each of those varieties in stock, or can order them for delivery within days.
Many record stores around the country hosted special activities, including refreshments, free samples, and live performances.
