Conrad Murray’s money problems were to blame for Michael Jackson’s death, the police officer who investigated the tragedy told a court. The star’s personal doctor was in such dire financial straits that he would do anything to get paid the £100,000 a month he was promised to treat the tormented pop legend, Los Angeles Police Detective Orlando Martinez testified.
At first, the officer thought the cause of the June 25, 2009 collapse was accidental or natural. But as he uncovered the debts the cardiologist had kept hidden he settled on a new motive – “financial gain.”
He found out the £1 million home that Murray owned in Las Vegas was being repossessed and the doctor owed hundreds of thousands of pounds in mortgage default payments, tax, child support and other debts. And he had shut down his clinics to work for just one patient – Michael Jackson. Detective Martinez said Murray’s deep financial distress led him to believe that “for this easy money” he may “break the rules, bend the rules to do whatever he needed to get paid.
