A battle of the big tops will occur in Adelaide in October when two Cirque du Soleil-style shows open within a day of each other.
While Cirque du Soleil’s tribute show Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour starts at the Entertainment Centre on October 15, Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Human and Horse - created by Cirque co-founder Normand Latourelle - will open the next day for an initial two-week season at a yet-to-be determined tent location.
Already seen by four million people in North America and Europe, Cavalia reinvents the equestrian arts with 48 horses and 36 riders, alongside aerialists, acrobats, dancers and musicians from all over the world.
Cavalia has already played in Sydney and Brisbane and opens in Melbourne later this month.
“We are thrilled to extend our first ever Australian tour to Adelaide and Perth,” said Latourelle.
“It is an honour to bring this show, which started on the other side of the world in Canada, to a country that has such a great affinity with both the performing arts and horses.”
Beneath its white big top, billed as the largest touring tent in the world, horses and artists cavort in front of a digital background projected onto a 60m-wide screen to create virtual environments.
The audience faces a 50m-wide stage, which allows the horses space to gallop at full speed, at times running completely free, unfettered by bridles or halters.
Tickets for Michael Jackson: The Immortal Tour went on sale at Ticketek yesterday and Cavalia goes on sale at www.cavalia.com.au today.
