DFW AIRPORT — For the first time since the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the U.S. has issued a global travel warning.

The Department of Homeland Security said it is taking extra precautions at airports and travel hubs.

A spokesperson at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport said travelers won’t notice anything different, adding it is important to remember that the State Department warning urges Americans to take extra precautions for all forms of public transportation overseas — not just in airports.

Most travelers we spoke to say it’s been business as usual for both incoming and departing international travelers.

Shannon Holt arrived at the airport on Sunday to see off two teenage foreign exchange students — one headed to Spain, the other to Sweden.

She said as teenagers, they were not aware of the global travel alert sparked by the increased terrorist threat, but she certainly was.

“I’ve noticed just a few moments ago, in fact, I had something on my phone — another notice about they’ve closed consulates,” Holt said. “That’s worrisome, but I think this is the highest alert we’ve seen in a long time.”

Many lawmakers said Sunday the terrorist chatter right now is similar to what was observed just before the 9/11 attacks.

Americans traveling abroad are urged to sign up for free State Department alerts and to register with U.S. consulates in the countries they visit.
