America is a nation of ‘Conrad Murrays’, the doctor who prescribed fatal amount of prescription drugs to Pop icon, Michael Jackson, the U.S. Government has revealed in a new study as 16,000 die yearly from prescription drug overdoses.
Doctors are acting effectively as drug dealers and are the largest suppliers of narcotics to chronic abusers, a U.S. study by the Government’s ‘Center for Disease Control’ in Atlanta, has found.
As the rate of prescription overtakes those addicted to illicit drugs, the U.S. Government say that Doctors are fuelling the epidemic of prescription drug chronic users and overdose”, the report says, after an exhaustive study.
Previously, it was thought that chronic users were getting prescription drugs from friends and family but now the Center for Disease Control say that doctors are the problem prescribers and enablers, just like Conrad Murray, who was convicted of causing Michael Jackson’s death by administering a cocktail of dangerous prescription drugs.
The latest statistics suggest that Prescription drugs — of the type favoured in Hollywood, painkillers such as OxyContin and Vicodin — caused more than 16,000 deaths, the LA. Times reported, following the release of the CDC study.
A spokesperson for the CDC said “at this point, virtually everyone recognises that this is a serious problem that has been getting much worse”.
“What we now are figuring out is what’s going to work to reverse it”.
In 2011, they described prescription chronic users as an epidemic.
Reported in a leading medical journal, the report says that there are also a number of doctors who are simply using their medical licences for drug dealing to chronic users.
The study said that a quarter of chronic users got their drugs direct from doctors.
For chronic users, “every time you use the drug, it’s another opportunity to overdose, a CDC spokesperson said.
