SHIMLA: To increase the voting percentage in the coming parliamentary elections in Himachal Pradesh, where 10% polling stations had registered low polling in 2012 assembly elections, the election commission (EC) has decided to come out with a song inspired by 1985 chart-buster jingle ‘We Are the World’ written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie.
While the Jackson song was used for raising funds for African famine relief, the EC has decided to bring together folk singers to create a song that could motivate people to come out and vote on May 7. EC official Neeraj Sharma said the 1985 jingle had brought together people across the globe for a cause. With a view to create similar inspiration, folk songs would be composed in different dialects of all 12 districts in Himachal to encourage and achieve maximum participation of voters, Sharma said.
The department has already roped in three renowned folk singers of the state - Karnail Rana, Vicky Chauhan and Nirmala Sharma - besides radio jockey Shalini Sharma for narration. Hunt is on to include more voices to add credence to the song. “More singers would be included and the plan is to give representation to each district in the song,” he added.
