A glittering black tie ball will be held in memory of seven-year-old boy who died of a brain tumour.
Dean Bates and Karen Carter, of Warrens Shaw Lane, Edgware, are inviting people to the first ever Charlie Charges On event to support charity the Brain Tumour Research.
The couple’s “bubbly and wonderful” son Charlie Carter-Bates, died in 2010 just eight months after being diagnosed – and four years on, his parents have finally found the strength to raise money in his honour.
Mrs Carter said: “I really feel that Charlie is with me and helping us to make the event go with a bang.
“We are really looking forward to our ball, although it would never have happened without my husband, Dean Bates, and our friends and our sponsors.”
Charlie was a fan of Michael Jackson, so the event, at the Hilton Hotel in Watford, will include a Michael Jackson tribute band and a DJ.
Mrs Carter, 32, added: “I got goose-bumps and tears came to my eyes when we discovered a robin trapped in the ballroom at the Hilton when we had gone to finalise arrangements.
“Often when I take my children to school we see a robin and I always say “that’s Charlie saying hello”. I read somewhere that if a robin keeps appearing, it’s a lost loved one keeping an eye on you.”
Since launching Charlie Charges On in February, the family have raised £5,000 for the Brain Tumour Trust.
Even though brain tumours kill more people under 40 than any other cancer, the disease receives less than one per cent in grant money for research purposes. A day of research costs £2,740.
The ball will take place on Saturday, October 25 at the Hilton Hotel, in Tylers Way, Watford. To buy tickets, visit www.charliechargeson.com
