Students, teachers and parents celebrated Black History Month Friday afternoon with a student program at Nathaniel H. Stephens Elementary School.
The program featured song, music from the school band, dance, poetry, a game show entitled “The Swag is Right” and a tribute to the late ESPN broadcaster Stuart Scott.
A total of 16 Stephens Elementary students competed enthusiastically in the game show, which featured four rounds of questions all centered on black history. Winners of the four rounds were Taylor Self, Ana Owens, Jaxon Kerly and Raylee Moore. Self and Moore both answered first and correctly three of the four questions in their rounds and Self was named the overall winner by spinning a homemade wheel for the most points.
Jasmin Martinez, who emceed the program, pointed out that swag in the game’s title did not refer to style but to rules at the school: show respect for others; work quietly; always raise your hand; and give your best.
A group of students called Praise in Motion including (ReAsia Brooks, Jariyah Williams and Kellasha Smith) performed an expressive dance to William Murphy’s “It’s Working” and another group, Poetry in Motion (including Brooks, Elizabeth Brown, Emma Runfola, Cassidy Smith, Jayla Edwards, Makenna Sanders, Jemya Allen and Amariya Wyckoff) performed similar expression to Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise.”
The Stephens Elementary Choir sang “Greatest Love of All” in a tribute to Whitney Houston, the school’s band performed “Kum Ba Yah” and “When the Saints Come Marching In” and the percussion ensemble favored the crowd with a special presentation.
The Michael Jackson Dancers (Ensely Goggans, Javion Freeman, Eloise Franklin, Savanna Taylor, Star Johnson, RaeLeigh Caldwell, Shanaya McNewal Daneiya Owens, Mikhia Burt, Zy Mitchell, Kayden Ray, Marcel Ballard, Christopher Foster and Celeste Hayes) discoed to a medley of The Jackson 5’s “ABC” and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” “Bad” and “Man in the Mirror.”
Finally, the tribute to Stewart Scott by students Jartavious Burroughs, Sam Duck, RyDarius Price and Mario Pearson was, as Scott might say, “as cool as the other side of the pillow.”
Stephens School Principal Kim Smith ended the program by advising those in attendance to heed Jackson’s advice from “Man in the Mirror.”
“If you want to make the world a better place take a look at yourself and make a change,” Smith said.
