FIRST things first, Thriller Live isn’t a jukebox musical but a tribute concert honouring the music of the late Michael Jackson.
Conceived by Adrian Grant, who met the “king of pop” while running a UK-based fanzine, it is unashamedly celebratory in tone. There’s no narrative beyond a brief summation of his career and record-breaking achievements, and certainly no mention of any of the controversial aspects of his personal life.
It’s all about the songs, tracing his career from the Jackson Five to the 1990s, with around 30 of his biggest hits including Man In The Mirror, The Way You Make Me Feel, Bad, Billie Jean, Smooth Criminal and Thriller.
Thriller Live performs around 30 of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits.
Directed and choreographed by Gary Lloyd, the show premiered in London in 2009 and has been running there ever since. It has also toured to 30 countries.
Performed on a set with a bridge at the back and stairs on either side, the production values are high with dynamic lighting, projections on large screens and slick, spangled costuming with umpteen costume changes.
Featuring six lead vocalists and an ensemble of dancers, the company is largely English with a funky Australian band.
The vocalists include Australia’s MiG Ayesa, who has performed in the show in London, and Prinnie Stevens, who featured in the West End production briefly prior to the Australian tour.
